Utilizarea Back-Up-ringurilor din PTFE previne deteriorarea O-ringurilor din cauciuc în sistemele de etanşare.
O-ringurile din cauciuc se folosesc de obicei în aplicaţiile hidraulice şi pneumatice, dinamice şi statice, dar au tendinţa de a-şi pierde caracteristicile sub acţiunea temperaturilor şi presiunilor ridicate.
Tehnologia sistemelor fluidodinamice actuală combină tot mai mult presiunile mari cu temperaturile ridicate. Această combinare poate limita proprietăţile fizice şi mecanice ale O-ringurilor din cauciuc ducând la deteriorare, fapt care explică importanţa folosirii Back-Up-ringurilor ca mijloc de protecţie.
